Pianist

Chinese pianist Nan Ni has been praised by The Boston Musical Intelligencer as “a confident, accurate, powerful, and articulate interpreter,” captivating audiences with performances that balance intellectual depth and expressive lyricism. Her artistry has been recognized through major competition honors, including First Prize at the Fou Ts’ong International Concerto Competition, where her performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto was celebrated for its refined clarity and exquisitely nuanced phrasing.

Nan’s achievements include top prizes at the Los Angeles Young Musician International Piano Competition, the Conero International Piano Competition, and the Shenzhen Piano Open Competition. She is also a three-time winner of the Piano Department Honors Competition at the New England Conservatory and has been recognized with awards such as the St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist Award, the Tan Family Grant Scholarship, the Shanghai Government Scholarship, the Niu Ende Piano Scholarship, and multiple audience awards.

An active soloist and chamber musician, Nan has performed extensively across Asia, Europe, and North America. Her festival appearances include Music@Menlo, the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, the Salzburg Mozarteum Summer Academy, and the Music Academy of the West.

Nan began her training at the Music Middle School affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory, studying under Natalia Filippova, and later earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the New England Conservatory, studying with Bruce Brubaker. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at NEC under the guidance of Bruce Brubaker and Alessio Bax.

In addition to her achievements as a pianist, Nan is also an accomplished organist, performing at venues such as the Church of the Covenant in Boston and collaborating with NEC’s Concert Choir and Chamber Singers under the instruction of Thomas Handel. Beyond music, she is deeply interested in ancient Chinese poetry and Pre-Raphaelite art, exploring how different artistic traditions inform and enrich her musical expression.
