I. § The Vision

Photography as acknowledgment.

The American Young Artists Association is a New York–based nonprofit dedicated to building meaningful platforms for artists. CHUANG — Beyond the Frame is our first international photography program: a competition built to the standards of the Photographic Society of America, paired with a curated tour designed to put carefully selected work in front of audiences who matter.

We curate, not collect. Every artist is approached with intention — how their work is framed, who it is presented alongside, and the environment in which it is experienced.

The program emphasizes cultural exchange, professional credibility, and long-term artist development. PSA recognition reinforces fairness and global benchmarking; the four-city traveling exhibition extends visibility from a single online gallery into the shared geography of contemporary photography.

Submissions are open to creators worldwide. There is no mandatory age limit. A dedicated Youth Track ensures that photographers under 21 receive targeted recognition without compromising the unified, high-standard structure of the salon.

II.
§ II · Program Architecture

One salon. Four cities.

A single PSA-recognized online salon serves as the centralized entry point. Selected works then travel as a unified curated showcase to four cities — without the operational complexity of a PSA circuit, while preserving the editorial coherence of one exhibition seen by many audiences.

Traveling Showcase

A curated offline exhibition drawn from award winners and high-scoring acceptances. Travels as one show — a single editorial voice, four contexts.

City Spotlight Module

Each city contributes a localized layer — a regional theme or a roster of artists connected to that city — building cultural relevance without breaking the main narrative.

IV.

Programming Layer

Opening receptions, juror panels, portfolio reviews, youth workshops and sponsor evenings — each city follows the same format, produced with local hands.

§ III · Thematic Sections

Six ways of seeing.

Each section is a position on what a photograph can be — from the patience of documentary to the speculative grammar of computational imaging. All sections accept both Color (OC) and Monochrome (OM) submissions, judged in parallel tracks.

Portraiture

Portraits of Identity

The core is about how you see a person. Portraiture is never just about making people look good — it is about understanding others. In an age of rapid consumption and labeling, this section asks whether a photograph can penetrate the surface: a glance, a moment of silence, a detail. It encourages a more responsible way of looking — not staring, not seeking the exotic — using the lens as a form of acknowledgment.

Acknowledging differences. Acknowledging vulnerability. Acknowledging that everyone deserves to be treated seriously.

Special Track

AI Photo / Computational Imaging

AI-based image creation, at its best, is a new literacy of seeing — one that forces creators to be explicit about intention, authorship, ethics, and method. This section exists to explore what photography can mean when the camera is no longer the only tool. It values conceptual clarity and aesthetic control over novelty.

A strong entry feels like a complete visual statement: the idea is clear, the world-building coherent, the technical process in service of the story. Because AI imagery can drift into imitation or spectacle, the bar for originality and responsibility is set higher here — especially around identity, consent, and cultural representation.

Documentary

Everyday Documentary

The value of documentary photography lies in making the unseen visible and the ignored understandable. Unlike grand narratives, this section encourages an approach from the everyday: family, work, community, school, migration, illness, labor, the small frictions between people. What truly changes the viewer is often the small, concrete evidence of life.

The core is not dramatization but trust. Do you respect your subjects? Do you honestly present the context? Do you avoid using suffering to please the viewer? When photography stands on ethical grounds, it can stand on emotional grounds.

Nature

Nature & Our Planet

Nature photography is no longer a postcard genre. It is closely tied to how we imagine the future. This section invites work that goes beyond grandeur to capture the more complex relationship: how humanity enters nature, alters it, depends on it.

Excellent works present beauty and boundaries — the wariness of wildlife, the delicate balance of an ecosystem, the silence after extreme weather, the slow erosion of development. Nature is not a backdrop. It is our shared structure of existence.

Culture

Culture, Heritage & Ritual

Culture is not a collection of ancient things — it is how a society remembers and understands itself. This section focuses on the encounter between tradition and the contemporary: how a craft survives, how a festival changes shape, how the values of a community live in objects, garments, food, gestures.

Strong work does not turn culture into a spectacle. It enters the scene with respect and specificity, asking the viewer to feel why these details matter. Across regions, this section often produces the most generative cross-cultural dialogue.

Experimental

Experimental / Conceptual Vision

In an age of mass-produced images, clarity is no longer scarce — a singular visual language is. The value of experimental and conceptual photography lies in constructing a new way of seeing, not simply recording the world. Work may be abstract, non-narrative, or formally radical — but it must answer one question: why this way?

The strongest entries are highly consistent: color, rhythm, material, space, and symbol support each other into a perceptible worldview. This section gives young creators room to take real risks — and rewards intentional ones.

Open Color

Full-color photography. Each entry must be designated to a single thematic section. Color and monochrome entries are judged in parallel tracks.

Black-and-white photography. Subtle warm or cool toning is acceptable provided the image reads primarily as monochrome and contains no obvious color elements.

§ V · Eligibility & Youth Track

Open to all. Built for the next.

The competition is open to photography creators worldwide. There is no mandatory age restriction on entry — youth participants submit to the same official sections as every other applicant.

To support younger photographers without diluting judging standards or adding operational complexity, the Youth Track is designed as an awards and support framework rather than a separate submission section. Photographers under 21 at the time of submission are automatically considered for Youth Awards through a secondary selection process.

Two systems, one ceremony.

PSA medals provide international benchmarking. AYA honors recognize the editorial decisions of our curators — a distinctive voice, cultural dialogue, the work that lingered longest. Only one award per entrant per section is permitted.

A unified curated exhibition built around award winners and high-scoring acceptances — produced once, traveled four times. Each city anchors the show with its own Spotlight module, opening reception, juror talk, and youth programming.

§ VIII · Timeline

From entry to exhibition.

A single closing date, transparent judging, results, the online gallery within PSA deadlines, and then the four-city tour begins. Specific dates will be confirmed on the entry page and within the official PSA listing.

Submissions Open

Centralized entry portal opens for global applicants. Youth fee waivers announced.

Stage II.
Closing Date

One unified closing date across all sections and tracks. Late entries not accepted.

Stage III.
Judging

Anonymous judging by an international jury — 3 to 5 judges per section, including at least one PPSA-level juror.

Stage IV.
Results & Online Gallery

Awards announced. PSA-required online gallery published and held public for one full year. Digital catalog by Day 90.

Stage V.
The Tour

Curatorial selection, print & framing, then the four-city traveling exhibition: New York → Paris → Beijing → Singapore.

Is there an age limit to enter?

No mandatory age limit applies to entry. The competition is open to photography creators worldwide. Photographers under 21 at time of submission are automatically considered for the Youth Track Awards in addition to all standard awards.

Can I submit the same image to more than one section or track?

No. Each image may only be entered once — to one thematic section and one track (Color or Monochrome). If you wish to enter the same body of work across sections, please curate distinct images for each.

Are AI-generated images allowed?

AI-generated and AI-assisted works are accepted only in Section 02 — AI / Computational Imaging, and require full disclosure of toolchain, authorship basis, and prompts (or key prompt phrases plus negative constraints).

All other sections require authentic photographs. Standard tonal and color adjustments are allowed; fabricating or replacing reality (face replacement, adding/removing people or objects, "restoring" elements that weren't there) is not.

How is judging conducted?

Each section is judged by 3–5 judges, consistent across the entire exhibition, with at least one PPSA-level (or higher) juror and at least one judge residing in a host country. Judging is anonymous: no pre-viewing, no entrant identity disclosed. Judging guidelines are provided to all jurors immediately before judging begins.

What rights does AYA take in submitted work?

Artists retain all rights to their work. By entering, you grant AYA non-exclusive rights to display selected works in the PSA-required online gallery, the digital catalog, the four-city traveling exhibition, and related promotional materials. Full credit is retained by the artist in all uses.

What happens after I submit?

You will receive a confirmation email with your unique entry reference and detailed payment instructions. Once payment is confirmed (via Zelle or PayPal), a secure file-upload link is issued within 24 hours, where final image files meeting the PSA judging specs are uploaded.

If I am selected for the offline tour, who covers print and frame costs?

Print and frame production for the traveling exhibition is covered by AYA and partner sponsors. Selected artists are not asked to cover production. Travel to opening events is at the artist's own discretion; selected artists may be invited to participate in city programming.
